Youkobo Art Space gathers with the Teiko Hinuma Research Lab of Joshibi University of Art & Design, 3331 Arts Chiyoda, Move Arts Japan, HomeBase and ACOSS, along with various other microresidencies around Japan to present a 3 day forum across 21st-22nd February entitled “Considering Artist in Residence (AIR) – A home for the creative activities of artists, its structure as an important vessel within society, and the potentials of a network”.
In October 2012, the general meeting of the international AIR network “Res Artis” was held in Tokyo, followed shortly after by a research presentation into the progress of microresidencies initiated within Japan, providing a fresh opportunity to consider the system of AIR as a social vessel and the possibility of future networks. In order that the existence of AIR as places of, or providers of opportunities for artistic creation/ production be greater recognized, and that they are actively utilized, in addition to increasing their function as a part of society, still more discussion and research is necessary.
In this forum reports, discussions, and workshops relating to the current state of domestic activities and numerous other research themes will be held. We will examine the reality of a domestic and overseas AIR network, hold a presentation of case studies by art university research labs, and consider the possibilities of collaboration between AIR and art universities, and realizable collaborative projects pivoted on a domestic and international microresidence network. In putting into practice and accumulating research and discussions together with artists and those concerned with AIR, we aim to strengthen the role of AIR as an important social vessel, while at the same time contributing to the further development of these activities.
